I hope everyone is enjoying their Memorial Day, but let's not forget why we celebrate this day. The last Monday in the month of May is set aside as a day to honor the men and women who have died while serving in the military. Originating in the years after the Civil War, it was formally recognized as a federal holiday in 1971. Each year in observance of Memorial Day there are cemetery visitations, where flowers and markers are often placed on the graves of veterans buried there, there are also memorial services, family picnics or reunions and, of course, there's always parades.

I try not to miss the Memorial Day Parade held each year in downtown Faribault. It starts at 10AM and usually lasts about 20-30 minutes. Hopefully you were able to make it out to this event. The sun was shining and there was a light breeze, a perfect day for a parade. My grandchildren really enjoyed seeing the fire trucks, the vintage cars and hot rods, and they really got excited seeing the horses. If you went, I hope you had as nice of a time as I did.
