If you've ever wanted to know what it was like to spend the night on the Mississippi River, that opportunity just became a little bit closer to happening. There is a really fun bed and breakfast located on a former river barge/tugboat docked in Saint Paul, and it's open year-round for those who want to spend a unique night aboard a ship.

I more or less stumbled into the Covington Inn Bed and Breakfast on a social media page devoted to 'Unique' places in Minnesota. After seeing the post I decided I had to learn more about this business.

What did the boat do before it was turned into a Bed and Breakfast?

The Covington Inn website has the complete history of the Covington, but before the boat was turned into a Bed and Breakfast, it was used to push barges of liquid cargo, usually, petroleum, along a 1,000-mile stretch of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers.

"Fifty years later, the visionary partners of River Valley Preservation Company saw the Covington dry-docked in Louisiana and hauled her upstream to St. Paul. They gutted the tow's inner workings, then inch by inch transformed the boat's steely chambers into cozy rooms. In 1995, the boat re-emerged with a new purpose, The Covington Inn."

The Covington Inn was recently voted as one of the top three Bed and Breakfast options in Minnesota, as well as being one of the most romantic places people could stay in Minnesota too.

There are several different options for rooms to stay in while you spend time on the river, you can see those options here, which you should note all have fireplaces inside, to keep you warm year-round.

So the next time you've got an itch to stay someplace different, this might be an option.
