How Does Covid-19 Affect Your Pets?

CAN MY PET GET COVID-19?

There have been many stories recently that have frightened people about dogs getting Covid-19. Although it IS possible for pets to get Covid-19, according to the cdc.gov, only a few pets have been confirmed to be infected with the virus that causes Covid-19.  That could be because we are not testing our pets, but of those that were tested so far, some of those pets didn't show any signs of illness. The pets that did get sick all had mild symptoms that could be taken care of at home, and NONE have died from the infection.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR PET FROM COVID-19

If someone in your household gets Covid-19, or if your pet comes in contact with an individual outside your household that has Covid-19, you should keep your dog isolated at home instead of taking them on their daily walk. You should keep your pet away from other members of your household, including other pets.

That being said, there are some things that you DO NOT do to pets.

• DO NOT Wipe or bathe your pet with chemical disinfectants, alcohol, hydrogen peroxide.
• DO NOT use hand sanitizer on your pets.
• DO NOT use counter cleaning wipes, or other industrial or surface cleaners. NONE OF THESE types of products are safe for cats, kittens, dogs, puppies or other animals.
• DO contact your Vet if you think your dog is sick and may have Covid-19. You may be able to set up a Tele-visit to determine appropriate steps to help your pet on a path to recovery.

CAN I GET COVID-19 FROM MY PET?

According to information at cdc.gov, there is NO evidence that animals are playing a significant role in the spread of Covid-19. The risk of animals spreading to humans is considered to be low. But because all animals can carry germs that CAN make people sick, it's always a good idea to practice the same healthy habits around your pets as you do other people; that is, keep them away from sick people. Don't take your dogs to high traffic areas like dog parks. It might be a good time to just let your dog runaroun inside the house instead of going for a walk where they can come in contact with people that may have Covid.
