If you are planning to travel this summer, you might want to think about what you are packing. Delta Airlines announced today that it was increasing the amount it charges passengers for checked bags. Delta is the 3rd airline to hike its bag fees this week, in part because of higher jet fuel costs.

Going Up, Up, & Up

Passengers who are checking either one of two bags with Delta will have to pay $10 more per bag, and another $50 for a third bag. So the new costs for passengers needing to check bags are:

1st bag: $45

2nd bag: $55

3rd bag: $200

The new fees are associated with passengers flying on domestic and short-haul international flights.

Third Airline To Hike Bag Fees

Delta is the third airline to hike checked bag costs, following JetBlue and United. Not all passengers will be seeing price hikes, as first-class passengers, Delta SkyMiles Medallion club members, and other eligible customers will still be able to check bags for free, according to CBS News.

Overall Costs To Fly Have Also Gone Up

According to Forbes, domestic flights have cost airline passengers roughly 10% more since the US-Iran conflict began. Fortune Magazine did the math and found that transcontinental routes have gone up a whopping 148%.

Wanting To Save On Airline Travel?

The best bet to save on airline travel would be to book early, rather than waiting, as fuel costs are still expected to rise, and it will be a little bit before they come down, if the conflict ends soon.

Another way to save on airfare would be to use Google Alerts for price drops.
