Kenyon-Wanamingo Football Pulls a Willie Nelson
The Kenyon-Wanamingo Knights were originally supposed to go to Blooming Prairie this Friday to play the Class A top ranked Awesome Blossoms. That was foiled by some COVID-19 issues in Blooming Prairie.
Within a couple hours of being notified that game was not going to happen they booked the Zumbrota-Mazeppa Cougars to come to Kenyon and play this Friday, Z-M was supposed to go to Lewiston-Altura but they had COVID-19 positives.
Now the Knights are on the road again (Willie Nelson) to tangle with the #7 Class 2A rated Paynesville Bulldogs. Last week's ranking from the Associated Press.
Randy Hockinson is the defensive coordinator for Kenyon-Wanamingo and says he has prepared game plans for Blooming Prairie, Zumbrota-Mazeppa and now Paynesville.
Paynesville is probably about 2 1/2 hours from the Kenyon-Wanamingo area by bus.
Siri on my phone said it was 153 miles by car from Kenyon to Paynesville.
These are the COVID-19 times football coaches and athletic directors live in. It just so happens Hockinson is also the Athletic Director at Kenyon-Wanamingo.
He said Paynesville has been very easy to work with after he was notified by Zumbrota-Mazeppa of their situation yesterday.
Hockinson was in scramble mode trying to find a game because he doesn't want to see the kids lose a game in this already shortened season.
Paynesville was supposed to play Holdingford this week.
Kickoff will be 7:00 p.m. Friday night.
A number of area schools have had games cancelled this week:
- New Prague at Rochester Mayo
- Albert Lea at Mankato East
- New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva at Martin County West
- Pine Island at Dover-Eyota
