Merlin Players ‘Calendar Girls’ Opens Friday

Merlin Players Artistic Director Julianna Skluzacek brings some cast members of their production of the comedy "Calendar Girls" on AM Minnesota at 9:30 this morning.

Joining Skluzacek will be Kristin Elder Sellentine of Faribault and Jackie Ostlund of Owatonna. The play is based on the 2003 movie starring Helen Mirren.

It is the story of a group of friends who decided to revolutionize the Women's Institute of Knapley, England's sedate calendar to raise money for a local charity.

News of the calendar spread like wildfire, even internationally.

The success of the calendar forced best friends Chris and Annie, to reach a new understanding of their friendship and all the women discover getting older holds its own special beauty.

On a side note, people in Faribault might remember the former Faribault Art Center doing their version of a calendar girls fundraiser that included some men a number of years ago. Everyone posed in the buff, but their private areas were cleverly covered. State Bank of Faribault President Richard Carlander was one the people on the calendar.

There will be an opening night reception this Friday.
