MN DNR Allowing ‘Dispersed Camping’ at State Forests
As part of Stay Safe Minnesota, the DNR is allowing what they call "dispersed camping" across the state.
As of Monday May 18th, state forests in Minnesota are allowing campers back for overnight stays.
Dispersed camping is different than camping in a designated campground. It is a wilderness experience for campers who enjoy camping far from others and do not need any amenities.
The guidelines for dispersed camping are as follows:
- Camping is limited to a single household.
- There are no amenities. No bathroom, pit toilet, water pump, fire grate, trashcan, or picnic table.
- You must camp least one mile outside of designated campsites or campgrounds on state forest land.
- No fee. First-come, first-served.
- Summer dispersed camping is limited to 14 days.
When it comes to camping, participants must follow the other usual guidelines set by the DNR. Cleaning up campsites, not setting up permanent structures, no blocking roads, and only using approved firewood for campfires.
I know a lot of families that kick off their summer camping season on Memorial Day Weekend and it is nice that this is an option, even if it isn't exactly like what people are used to. It will just be nice to get outside and breathe in that fresh Minnesota air. It's good for the soul.
