That fishing opener is a couple of months away yet. But you need to start getting used to some new regulations for fishing those Northern Pikes that can be fun to bring in and great eating too.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says the new rules apply to inland waters of the state, in the north-central, northeastern and southern regions. These rules apply to the numbers you can keep and the size depending on the region.

The new regulations are as follows:

  • North-central region: Limit of 10 northern pike, but not more than two pike longer than 26 inches; all from 22 to 26 inches must be released.
  • Northeastern region: Two pike; anglers must release all from 30 to 40 inches, with only one over 40 inches allowed in possession.
  • Southern region: Two fish; minimum size 24 inches.

Fishing opener is May 12.
