Noxious Weed/Invasive Plant Grants
Noxious weeds and invasive plants that we need to deal with in Minnesota seem to be increasing. Most of these weeds and plants are not native to Minnesota. That means if they can tolerate our cold winters sometimes they can take over a landscape. Buckthorn is one example that comes to mind. Buckthorn is so aggressive in woodlands that it can take over native species and all you have is trees and buckthorn! It was imported from China as an ornamental shrub.
The Minnesota Department of Agriculture's Noxious Weed and Invasive Plant Grant has since 2018 awarded over $1 million that funded a variety of activities like buying equipment and supplies, conducting mapping and outreach activities, plus hiring private applicators to manage noxious weeds. The grant program is funded by the Environmental and Natural Resources Trust Fund.
Go to the Minnesota Department of Agricultures website where you can see the request for proposals and find the applications. Applications are due by 4:00 pm on October 15, 2020.
