Owatonna Wrestlers Win Big Nine, Hockey Team Loses Key Game

The Owatonna High School wrestling team wrapped up its third straight unbeaten Big Nine season with a 57-12 win at Faribault Friday afternoon in a match postponed the day before. The conference title is Owatonna's fifth in seven years and 25th overall.

Owatonna's victories came from Blake West, YJ Evillard, Kanin Hable, Chase Dallman, Jacob Reinardy, Landen Johnson, Matt Seykora and Cade King. Faribault forfeited three weights. OHS (No. 2AAA, 22-3, 10-0) will be the top seed in Section 1AAA with the tournament to begin Thursday, February 14 at the Owatonna gym. Section semifinals and finals are February 16 at the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester.

Owatonna boys' hockey lost 5-4 in overtime to Rochester Century at the Four Seasons Centre. The Panthers scored four power play goals including the game winner nineteen seconds into the extra session for the season sweep over the Huskies. OHS still leads the Panthers in the Big Nine standings.

Andrew Munns, Jacob Stoykovich, Dom Valento and Casey Johnson scored Owatonna's goals. The Huskies led 1-0, 3-1 and 4-3 and out shot the Panthers 30-19. A big crowd turned out for the game that was rescheduled from Thursday. OHS (13-7, 9-3) plays another big game at Rochester Mayo Saturday at 7:15 pm on KRFO AM 1390 from Graham Arena.

Rochester Mayo swept Owatonna in basketball Friday. The Spartan boys won 62-48 at OHS after leading 48-17 at the half. Mayo hit 11 three-pointers in the first half. Jack Hanson led Owatonna with 18 points. Jared Fett was back in the lineup after an early season injury. The Huskies go to Red Wing Monday for a makeup game with a 7:30 pm tap.

The Mayo girls jumped ahead quickly at home on their way to a 74-33 victory. Sara Anderson and Sarah Kingland each scored ten points. The Huskies host the Wingers in a makeup Monday with a 6 pm varsity start.
