The Rice County Sheriff's Office and Faribault Police Department were guests at a number of National Night Out block parties tonight.

In the city of Faribault there were 15 scheduled events while 7 events were planned throughout the county.

To be totally honest I went to the Buckham Center first because I knew they would be serving Sambusas.  Delicious Somalian food.  When I arrived there last year I recall they were out so I made sure it was going to be my first stop after the 5:05 p.m. evening report on KDHL.

Sambusa is a stuffed triangular pastry that can be made with all kinds of different fillings.  Typically lamb or beef meat is used in the meat Sambusa.

They are very good according to my taste buds. Kelly Nygaard from the Faribault Area Chamber of Commerce was serving them and said they were going like "Hotcakes."

So evidently a lot of other people enjoyed them also.

They contain some chopped onions, cilantro, green chili, chopped green onions, cumin powder, coriander powder, cardamom powder, a clove of garlic, salt, pepper for the filling.

For the Sambusa wrappers plain all-purpose flour, water and salt are needed and a flour paste helps seal the filling into the fried wrapper.

Hot dogs, popcorn, were served by Buckham West.  Freezies and water were also available near the Sambusas.

I love popcorn but felt it was too hot for me to enjoy it so I had a freezie and water with my two Sambusas.

Large city trucks were parked in the lower parking lot with the activities happening on the recently completed large open plaza area of the library.

Musical entertainment was provided.

Chief Sherwin was very popular with kids because he was handing out Faribault Police Badge stickers.

He told me he was hoping to be able to make about half the 15 City of Faribault parties.

I swung by St. Luke's Church on Prarie Avenue in south Faribault where they were holding their first Night to Unite event.

They were pleased considering the hot weather with the approximately 50 people who attended and were treated to hot dogs just off the grill, chips, water, ice cream treats. I admit I had a hot dog and a bottle of water.

They also had some musical entertainment that had concluded by the time I arrived on the scene.

The Faribault Fire Department arrived about the same time I did.

When I stopped by Wells Township Hall for the Roberds Lake event there was a good crowd and the handful of Rice County Sheriff's Deputies and Sheriff Jesse Thomas had just finished talking to them about staying safe.

I was told Veseli cancelled due to the heat but events were held at Channel Inn Warsaw, Forest Township Hall, the Estrem farm rural Nerstrand, rural Northfield and Morristown American Legion.

Were any of these invented in Rice County?
