Rice County Relay for Life Details on KDHL
It's time once again for the Rice County Relay for Life on the fairgrounds in Faribault. The local American Cancer Society fundraiser. I have to admit this is one of my favorite events each year. There are many people I only see that night and would love to see many new faces. The Honorary Co-Chair cancer survivors this year are Kay Kes and Roxie Mitchell and they will be on today's KDHL AM Minnesota program at 9:30 a.m. The other Honorary Co-Chair is Kaitlyn Haefmeyer, a caregiver.
Kay and Roxie will share a bit of their story of survival and help us put the event into perspective. They and all the survivors are why I participate. They will share more of their story during the lighting of the luminaries at 8:30 tomorrow night. If you have never attended the event I would encourage you to be there for the lighting service. After the Honorary Co-Chair share their stories with us they lead the lighting of the luminaries around the fairgrounds. When those luminaries are all lit I call it the biggest love fest in Rice County.
A Red Cross Blood Mobile will be on the grounds from 4 until 10 tomorrow evening and they are always in need of blood during the summer. Survivor Reception is at 5:00 p.m. If you have not purchased a luminary yet you can on the fairgrounds from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Allina Health will have a Cancer Education booth from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
We'll have great food available once again including the famous Nerstrand Meats hot dogs. Music will be performed by Mark Allen and Marcus Padilla.
Opening ceremony is at 6:00 p.m. I hope to see you there for at least a portion of the evening. After Monday's bank night this year's relay is at about 70 percent of the $100,000 goal going into tomorrow so we need a big push to reach that goal and won't be able to do it without your help.
