Southeastern Minnesota Pond Now Home to this Invasive Fish
KTTC in Rochester recently got a tip that a pond in Rochester is now being inhabited by goldfish. The pond is a retaining pond in northwest Rochester off 41st street.
Goldfish are cute and all as pets but in the wild, they're considered an invasive species.
The threat of invasive species has been on-going for a while. Asian carp have invaded lakes and streams, including the Mississippi River.
I just find it so funny that an aquarium fish is being found in the wild!
But apparently, that's not uncommon to see, the DNR says. They are also reminding everyone to not release their aquarium pets into the wild or this sort of thing will happen.
The DNR also said that they don't anticipate the goldfish in this particular pond to pose any major issue. They think that these goldfish will eventually become food for larger fish, like bass.
