Since July, 8 deer in Minnesota have been diagnosed with CWD, a neurological disease that kills deer. It's transmitted between deer through feces, saliva, and blood.

The Minnesota DNR wants to work on containing CWD in hopes of preventing it from spreading further. That's why they've announced 2 special hunts for the end of this month.

The first hunt will be December 21st - 23rd, the second will be December 28th - 30th. The DNR states that these hunts will be taking place in permit areas 603, 347 and 348, and portions of 343 and 345 south of Interstate 90 in Southeastern Minnesota.

The hope is to diminish the deer population, specifically the male deer population, in order to limit the spread of CWD any further.

The rules for the special hunts, what you do after you harvest a deer during the special hunt, what your carcass holding and disposal options are, among other information can be found HERE.
