Staying Cool at The Rice County Fair
The National Weather Service is warning us it will feel like 110 degrees or hotter Thursday, and the heat won't leave the area until Friday.
Rice County Public Health officials remind us to take precautions to keep family and pets cool and safe during the heat wave. Never leave pets or children inside hot vehicles, even with the windows down.
Heat exhaustion from long exposure or to high temperatures can lead to heat stroke. Here are some symptoms officials say to look out for: heavy sweating, paleness, muscle cramps, weakness, dizziness, nausea or vomiting.
Rice County Sheriff Troy Dunn told KDHL people need to be aware and they can certainly still have a great time at the Rice County Fair. Dunn told me there were no people treated throughout the day on Wednesday for heat stroke or heat exhaustion, and one person was treated on the opening night of the fair.
Canterbury Park officials in Shakopee announced Wednesday they were canceling Thursday's live racing because of the extreme heat. Canterbury President Randy Sampson cited the health and safety of the horses and jockeys.
Sampson said Canterbury Park consulted with Chief State Veterinarian Lynn Hovda before making the decision.
Racing resumes Friday at 6:30PM with a 10-race program. Canterbury officials hope to add a makeup race day September 1, pending approval from the Minnesota Racing Commission.
I stopped by just a few places around the Rice County Fairgrounds and took pictures of some of the things you can do to stay cool during the fair.
