After outlasting Farmington for a five-set win on Tuesday night, the Owatonna High School volleyball team danced on the court and sang the school song. The impromptu, enthusiastic celebration was probably in part due to a win over a rival who has had the upper hand in recent years and maybe a bit in relief for getting the win while battling nerves in the late goings. The Huskies had four consecutive missed serves on match point before putting away the Tigers in Farmington.

The back-and-forth night featured a pair of overtime sets and long point-runs for each squad. Owatonna (3-1) won 26-24, 20-25, 25-23, 13-25, 19-17 over Farmington (0-5). The Tigers have only played Big Nine teams so far this season. Tuesday's match was Owatonna's first against a non-conference team after starting the Big Nine season 2-1. The teams are both members of the new Section 1AAAA.

The Huskies had a well-balanced attack, showing off their tall front line. Mehsa Krause, Ava Eitrheim, Audrey Simon, Lauren Bangs, Leah Welker, Elizabeth Prostrollo and Brooke Kunkel all contributed multiple kills. Simon had some huge blocks. Bailey Manderfeld and Bella Berrie took turns distributing the ball. Lainey Smith had numerous athletic digs.

Despite the service errors late, OHS had a strong night serving with double-digit aces. The Huskies go to the Marshall Tournament September 10-11. It was a pleasure to cover Tuesday's match on Kat Kountry 105 FM radio, though I may have nearly lost my voice toward the end.

Tuesday night also saw OHS soccer facing off with Century. The Panther girls won 2-1 in overtime. The Century boys topped the Huskies 3-1. OHS boys play at defending conference champ Austin Thursday, September 9 in a Kat Kountry 105 FM broadcast at 7 pm. The girls host the Packers on Thursday at the Lincoln Soccer Complex.
