What’s The Longest Minnesotans Have Gone Without Seeing The Sun?

If you are anything like me, you probably are wondering when was the last time you've seen the sun. Well according to the forecast we might see the sun late in the day tomorrow (Wednesday). It got me wondering what's the longest Minnesota has gone without seeing the sun? The answer, 15 days back in 1972 according to the Minnesota DNR's climate journal.  

The climate journal used "solar radiation records at the University of Minnesota St. Paul Campus." Solar radiation record-keeping began on the campus in 1962, so just based on that fact, Minnesota could in fact have a longer record than 15 days of going sunless.

Typically we don't see the sun in December rather than in January, but it has happened before. Here are the top-3 sunless streaks in Minnesota history according to the DNR climate report.

1. October 30 to November 10, 1972

2. December 28, 1991 to January 8, 1992

3. December 24, 2005 to January 4th, 2006

Actually that 15-day streak could have been longer as just 4 days after the streak ended on November 14 there was less than an hour of sunshine followed by two more days of zero minutes of sunshine!
