Northfield Police Chief Monte Nelson says the investigation continues into the death of a Northfield woman reported as missing on New Year's Day.

Tiffany Louise Smith, 31, was reportedly upset and did not return home that morning. She was found deceased outdoors in Northfield on January 3.

Autopsy results were revealed today by Nelson, and cause of death is listed as "heroin toxicity" and also noted was, "contributing role of hypothermia could not be excluded." So the manner of death is "Undetermined."

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office and Rice County Coroner provided the results to Northfield Police.

Smith's body was located outside a home in the 400 block of Third Street East.

At the time, Nelson told KDHL there were no obvious signs of a struggle or any suspicious activity found. The chief said Smith may have been at the location where she was found unresponsive for about a day.

Anyone with more information is asked to contact the Northfield Police Department at (507) 645-4477.
