Additional Information

The Rice County Historical Society’s 2016 Fall Banquet and Annual Meeting will be Thursday, October 27, at the Elks Club, 131 Lyndale Ave. N., Faribault. The banquet will begin with a social hour at 5PM, dinner will be served at 6PM. There will be a brief business meeting as required by our bylaws at 7PM, followed by our keynote speaker: Don “Buck” Burkhartzmeyer.

Burkhartzmeyer will speak on the history of Burkhartzmeyer Shoes, a staple of downtown Faribault for more than three generations. In the late 1930s, Ferdie Burkhartzmeyer came to Faribault from Russia and become a leather buyer at the Shaft-Pierce Shoe Factory. When the factory closed in the 1940s, he and his wife, Martha, opened a shoe repair and harness shop. When sons Alvin, Walter (aka Putz), and Donald (aka Buck) returned from the war, they opened a shoe store on Central Avenue. The business continued to grow and in 1967, Burkhartzmeyer’s moved to its present location of 128 Central Ave. In 1985, the business was transferred to the third generation of ownership when Bruce (son of Alvin) and Brian (son of Donald) purchased it.

The meal will be catered by Nerstrand Meats.

Tickets for this event are $17.50 for RCHS and Chapter members and $20 for non-members. Tickets can be purchased from any RCHS board members or at the Rice County Historical Society, 1814 N.W. Second Ave., Faribault.
