Yesterday's Power 96 Cool One was John Mellencamp's "Get A Leg Up" from his 11th studio album, Whenever We Wanted. Released in October 1991, it's the first album he released strictly as John Mellencamp and it charted at No. 17 on the U.S. Billboard 200. Several singles were released from the album including "Love and Happiness," "Again Tonight," "Last Chance," "Now More Than Ever" and yesterday's Cool One, which made it to No. 14 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.

Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March 2008, Mellencamp has spent most of his career recording what is known as a kind of heartland rock that appeals to the down and dirty, blue-collar worker. Whenever We Wanted is one of my favorite efforts by Mellencamp, along with his 1993 follow-up release, Human Wheels.

Don't miss today's Power 96 Cool One, brought to you by Kelly's Auto Parts in Faribault, when I track a Mott the Hoople tune in remembrance of their drummer, Dale "Buffin" Griffen, who passed away last Sunday. And no, it's not "All the Young Dudes." Listen at 4:35PM to find out what I chose.
