It's been a while since I last heard The Breeders and their hit "Cannonball," so I decided to give it a listen and feature it as yesterday's Power 96 Cool One. From their second album Last Splash released in 1993, the single peaked at No. 44 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, No. 32 on the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks and No. 2 on the Alternative Songs chart. The album charted at No. 33 on the U.S. Billboard 200 and No. 5 on the UK Albums Chart.

The band was formed by Pixies bassist and back-up vocalist Kim Deal and Throwing Muses guitarist Tanya Donelly. The band's name comes from a group that Deal and her twin sister, Kelley, led while they were teenagers. This is a band that seemed to achieve fame quickly but kind of burned out just as fast, recording only four albums. Line-up changes, drug addiction and the main groups they belonged to may have been a factor in not continuing to record together.

Today's Cool One comes from a Michigan band most famous for their song about a high school boy trying to get away with grabbing a smoke. Listen at 4:35PM for the next Power 96 Cool One, brought to you by Kelly's Auto Parts in Faribault.
