Bassist and songwriter Jimmy Bain passed away on Sunday, January 24, while on the Def Leppard "Hysteria on the High Seas" cruise. He was a member of the group Last In Line, which was composed of artists who had performed together in the original Dio line-up, including Vivian Campbell, Vinny Appice and Andrew Freeman. The album Heavy Crown is suppose to come out on February 20.

Before all of this happened, Bain was a part of several bands, including Rainbow and Dio. He also helped Thin Lizzy's Phil Lynott co-write some songs for his solo effort, toured with John Cale and helped form a little-known band called World War III with vocalist Mandy Lion. It was during his short-lived tenure with World War III that I was able to meet Bain after a concert in the Twin Cities. He was very gracious and I enjoyed my lengthy conversation with him.

I thought about using a World War III tune for yesterday's Cool One but then I remembered another band that he'd been in during the late '70s and early '80s called Wild Horses. The band was formed by former Thin Lizzy guitarist Brian Robertson and Bain in summer 1978. They released two albums. Their 1980 debut release was self-titled and the 1981 follow-up was called Stand Your Ground. From their second album I pulled the track "Stake Out" for your listening pleasure.

Today's Cool One continues the tour through Bain's musical history. Join me at 4:35PM and find out what group and single I feature during the next Power 96 Cool One, brought to you by Kelly's Auto Parts in Faribault.
