A Valentine’s Day Reminder For Pet Owners

We've got 4 pets in our house, 3 cats and a dog, so naturally with Valentine's Day Friday, here is a reminder to pet owners as to what is poisonous/toxic and what isn't for your pets. Here is a quick guide for what is and isn't harmful to your pets this Valentine's Day.

The first thing that comes to mind is chocolate for dogs and cats. Check out those links for the reason's behind why your pet can't indulge in chocolate with you. Another staple on Valentine's Day is flowers and that's where it can get a little complicated, but here is a graphic I snagged from a humane society in Southern Minnesota.

Some flowers to avoid if you have pets in the home are lilies, daisies, mums, tulips, carnations, and lavender. What's ok for your pets and your Valentine? Roses, sunflowers, petunias, pansies, and most orchids.

Alcohol is something else that might come into play for your Valentine's Day plans. According to ProPetHero.com small amounts will make them sick and too much can suppress their breathing, leading to death if the right amount gets ingested. Don’t leave your drink unattended around your pets.

Finally, you might be setting the mood with some candles, make sure they aren't accessible to your pets, some of them smell like food and your dog and or cat might eat some of the candles, or worse, they could knock the candle over starting a fire or they could get burned by the flame.
