The National Weather Service is hosting classes around Minnesota to train in new SKYWARN storm spotters for this year. If you're interested there's a storm spotter class coming up in Morristown on Thursday, May 2nd.

What is SKYWARN? It's a volunteer program that was put together by the NWS that first started in the '70s. On the NWS website, they say that "the main responsibility of a SKYWARN® spotter is to identify and describe severe local storms."

Anyone can become a storm spotter! If you're interested you need to be trained in. At the training class, as the NWS website says, you'll learn:

  • Basics of thunderstorm development
  • Fundamentals of storm structure
  • Identifying potential severe weather features
  • Information to report
  • How to report information
  • Basic severe weather safety

The training class being offered for Rice County is taking place in Morristown on Thursday, May 2nd at the Morristown Police Department (402 Division St S) from 6 - 8:30 PM.

If you want more information about the class you can contact Bruce Morris at 507-330-3866 or willis55052@gmail.com.

Hang out with Carly Ross on Power 96 weekdays 3-7pm!
