Cannon Falls Faces Belle Plaine for Section Crown
The Cannon Falls Bombers started the season 1-10. They are now 12-11, two wins away from a MSHSL State Tournament berth. Thursday they play the Belle Plaine Tigers for that berth.
Belle Plaine needs one win to advance. Cannon Falls must win both games. The first contest is scheduled for a 5:00 p.m. first pitch in Gaylord. If a second game is necessary it will follow.
Both games will be broadcast on KDHL 920 AM, 97.9 FM, KDHL app with coverage starting about 4:50 p.m.
The turnaround in the season for Cannon Falls is nothing short of a miracle. Head Coach Bucky Lindow credits the kids for working hard in practice every day to get better.
Going into Monday's game against Sibley East the Bombers team batting average was .250. I'm guessing much higher when you take just their last 10 games into account.
The team pitching staff Earned Run Average is 3.45.
Senior lefthanded pitcher Riley Miller leads the staff with a 1.24 ERA. Opponents hit .189 against him with 7 earned runs in 9 games pitched. 42 2/3 innings is the updated number after Monday's 7-1 win over the Wolverines.
Miller has 75 strikeouts, 28 walks, 33 allowed hits, 7 hit batters.
Beau Zimmerman and Marcus Banks have pitched in the most games (11). Zimmerman with 36 1/3 innings pitched, 3.08 ERA, 39 strikeouts, 25 walks, 6 hit batters.
Opponents hit .260 against Zimmerman.
Banks started the Sibley East game going the first 4 innings by plan to keep him around 70 pitches so he would be available for Thursday. All the Cannon Falls pitchers will be able to pitch Thursday.
Belle Plaine has not played since their 3-0 win over the Bombers last Saturday in Gaylord so all their arms can go also.
Banks has 28 innings pitched, ERA around 3.70, 23 strikeouts, 24 walks, 30 hits allowed. Opponent average approximately .270.
The Bombers did not have a stolen base in their last game but this season they have 41 stolen bases. Other offensive statistics for the team are 120 runs scored, 140 hits, 22 doubles, 7 home runs, 95 RBI, 45 hit batters, 68 walks,
On base percentage going into Monday was 0.371 as a team so they have turned themselves into a very good baseball team.
The final Minnesota High School Baseball Coaches Association State Rankings had Belle Plaine #10 in Class 2A.
The Tigers go into Thursday's contest with a team batting average of .293, team ERA 2.09 with a 17-4 record.
This is incredible.
