...A donation to the DAV. It's not a mandatory donation, but the restaurants participating in the free root beer float day are encouraging donations to the Disabled American Veterans.

A & W Root Beer actually got its start with making floats in correlation with a parade honoring those returning from WWI according to its website. And today, National Root Beer Float Day is no different for A & W as they plan to "honor our company's roots by continuing to provide support in the homecoming of our service members."
