The Section 1A girls hockey tournament got underway Wednesday with games in Faribault, Red Wing, Northfield and Owatonna. All the higher seeds prevailed.

The Faribault Falcons defeated Austin 3-0 despite seeing Austin outshoot Faribault 24-17. Falcon junior goalie Camryn Salmonsen got the shutout while getting 24 saves.

Austin was 0-4 on the power play and Faribault didn't have a single power play in the game.

After a scoreless first period where Austin outshot Faribault 8-3, the Falcons got on the board in the second period at 6:13 with an Allyson McCoshen goal assisted by Alexis Ferris and Haley Lang. Austin outshot Faribault in that period too, 12-5.

The Falcons did outshoot Austin 9-4 in the final period with Haley Lang and Allyson McCoshen scoring both goals in the period unassisted, according to the official live game sheet.

Faribault travels to No. 7 ranked Red Wing on Saturday night and the game will be on KDHL Radio. Coverage begins at 6:45PM.

The Wingers crushed Winona 11-1 Wednesday night with future Gopher Taylor Heise getting a hat trick in the first period.

It was 8-0 after one period and the other three goals were scored in the second period. Winona didn't score until the 9:24 mark of the third period.

Only one penalty was called in the game and that was on Red Wing. Shots on goal were 38-15 in favor of the Wingers.

Northfield skated away from Albert Lea 6-0 at the Northfield Ice Arena. The Raiders were 2 for 2 on the power play.

It was 1-0 after the first period with Northfield scoring on a Brynn Puppe goal assisted by Kate Boland.

The Raiders added three goals in the second period. Kate Boland had a power play goal assisted by Madi Goldsworthy and Mallory Tidona. Boland had another goal in the period unassisted and Kate Bornhauser scored the other Raider goal.

In the third period, Puppe and Maddie Lapanta assisted a Lizzy Morsching power play goal and Goldsworthy had a goal assisted by Boland.

Northfield had 44 shots on goal and Albert Lea had seven.

The Raiders will host Owatonna on Saturday night at 7PM. Owatonna got by Waseca 3-1.

The Huskies had 41 shots on goal and the Bluejays 18. Both teams were 0 for 5 on the power play.

Owatonna took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a Margo Achterkirch goal assisted by Jenna Bogen and Jamie Davison. Each team had a goal in the second period. Owatonna's Bogen scored assisted by Achterkirch and Anna Herzog. The Huskies got a shorthanded insurance goal in the third period by Bogen assisted by Shannon VanReeth.

Laura Ebeling was in net for Owatonna and had 17 saves. Waseca's goalie Danni Dahms had 38 saves in the Blue Jays' final game of the season.
