It's almost like someone doesn't want you to eat Romaine lettuce for Thanksgiving.  Similar to a recall that occurred last year around this time, there is a voluntary recall being issued for Romaine lettuce with E. Coli the concern.

At this time, the recall effort is centered around one specific brand:  Tanimura & Antle. A total of 3,396 cartons of potentially affected product were distributed to locations across the United States.  The potentially affected product were shipped in cases packed in either 12, 15, 18, or 24 heads per case.  The process is completely voluntary out of an abundance of caution.  There have been no known or reported illnesses associated with the recalled product at this time.

Here are the specific details about what Romaine lettuce products are being recalled:

  • Brand:  Tanimura & Antle
  • Description:  Each package contains one single head of Romaine lettuce
  • Packaged date:  10/15/20 or 10/16/20
  • UPC number:  0-27918-20314-9
  • PTI codes (found on the outside of the cases - for retailer identification):  571280289SRS1 or 571280290SRS1

According to the United States Food and Drug Administration, E. Coli O157:H7 can be serious:

"[This causes a diarrheal illness often with bloody stools. Although most healthy adults can recover completely within a week, some people can develop a form of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS). HUS is most likely to occur in young children and the elderly. The condition can lead to serious kidney damage and even death."

Once again, the recall is completely voluntary and is being performed out an abundance of caution.  The FDA suggests that fresh packages of this lettuce are probably no longer on store shelves - saying "[i]t is unlikely that this product remains at retail establishments due to the shelf life of lettuce and the number of days that have passed".
