A Shakopee police officer shot and killed a person who pointed a gun at the officer Friday night, according to a social media post made by the Shakopee Police Department.

Shortly after 11 p.m. Friday, officers were called to a residence in the 800 block of Apgar Street for a fire alarm, the Shakopee Police Department said in a statement on social media.

While standing at the front door, the male raised the handgun and pointed it at the primary officer. Fearing for his life, the officer fired his weapon, hitting the male. Officers immediately began performing life-saving measures. The male was transported to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Officers involved were wearing body cameras and the incident was recorded. A handgun was recovered from the scene.

The officer involved is a twelve-year veteran of the department. His name is being withheld at this time.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is conducting the investigation, which remains active. No further information will be released by the Shakopee Police Department at this time.
