Have you ever looked at a water tower, and thought to yourself, how did community X decide what to put on it, or maybe you thought I could do better than that! Well, one Southern Minnesota community is offering up the chance for a local artist to do just that. Help design what a new downtown water tower will look like in Downtown Albert Lea.

Now before you start designing what the water tower in your head looks like, there are some guidelines that submission has to follow. According to AlbertLeaArtWalk.com's website, the website that is hosting the water tower artwork contest, each submission must have:

  • Your submission must include the name of our community ALBERT LEA.
  • You may use no more than 8 colors.

That's pretty much it for guidelines. As for the scope of the project, the website states;

"When you think of Albert Lea, what do you think of? Shopping, lake life, pontoon boat rides, fishing, wildlife, and other things make our community special. Your job is to reflect that special all around the center of the tower. This project is quite literally larger than life and will be a central image for years to come."

If you would like to submit your artwork, which can be a repeating design that would be a half and half piece of artwork, or something that is a complete wrap-around piece of artwork. This is a project that will be seen by hundreds of thousands of people over the lifetime of the water tower, which averages a life span of 30 years.

I know for a fact the water tower that this will be replacing is pretty much one of the best places to watch the 4th of July fireworks over Fountain Lake. The current water tower, has been something that many residents have wanted to have replaced, and it appears that the replacement is happening, and now someone else can be apart of the soon-to-be newest addition downtown.

All submissions must be submitted by April 30th, 2021

I've reached out to the folks who run the Albert Lea Art Walk website for comment on the project and will update this when I hear back about anything more specific in regards to the project.
