Do you like Faribault? Do you like history? Would you like to know more about Faribault's history and enjoy a nice leisurely walk at the same time? Well then, I've got just the thing for you.

This Saturday, August 13, the Rice County Historical Society is hosting a History Walk from 9AM to noon. The walk starts at the Rice County Historical Society, 1814 Second Ave. N.W., with registration from 9-10AM. During the walk you'll walk past the former sites of the Chicago-Great Western abandoned railroad bed, Faribault Gas and Power, Eighth Street Bridge near the Fleckenstein Brewery, the Schimmel Piano Co., Wimpy's Diner and others.

As I was writing this up, I realized most of these areas are a part of the big playground that was a part of my youth. I first explored these areas with my Uncle Jim when I was a youngster and he gave me a brief rundown of the history of some of these defunct businesses. This tour, I'm sure, will offer a more in-depth look at the history of each of these sites. Tickets are only $10 per person, $5 per student and kids 12 and younger are free, making this a fun family activity for your Saturday morning.
