‘Need for Speed’ Getting Last Minute 3D Conversion
In a move we haven’t seen in quite some time, ‘Need for Speed‘ is getting a last minute 3D conversion for its March release. That means — if they haven’t started yet and can send out the digital files the night before — DreamWorks has thirty eight days to get this done.
There haven’t been as many last minute conversions in recent years as there were in 2010, when ‘Avatar’ and ‘Alice in Wonderland’ gave the impression that audiences were happy to spend the extra dollars for the third dimension. That 3D boom led to the ‘Clash of the Titans’ remake and ‘The Last Airbender’ getting post-converted weeks before the films were scheduled to hit theaters. Since then it’s usually decided before a film is shot if it’s destined to be 3D, or (as was the case with both ‘Man of Steel‘ and ‘R.I.P.D.’) at least a couple of months before the film is scheduled to hit theaters.
There are a couple of reasons why the film might be post-converted at this late date. One is that DreamWorks fears that a film led by ‘Breaking Bad‘ star Aaron Paul may not have great international appeal, so they’re hoping to goose the grosses with this move. Another is that with a lot of first person driving footage, the film might benefit from the format. The least appealing option is that the studio thinks they have a turkey and want to charge more so the opening weekend and international numbers are inflated.
‘Need for Speed’ will be screening for critics shortly, which suggests they’re happy with the film, but we’ll know for sure when the film opens on March 14. Here’s the film’s synopsis:
The film centers around Tobey Marshall (Aaron Paul), a blue-collar mechanic who races muscle cars on the side in an unsanctioned street-racing circuit. Struggling to keep his family-owned garage afloat, he reluctantly partners with the wealthy and arrogant ex-NASCAR driver Dino Brewster (Dominic Cooper). But just as a major sale to car broker Julia Maddon (Imogen Poots) looks like it will save Tobey’s shop, a disastrous race allows Dino to frame Tobey for a crime he didn’t commit, and sending Tobey to prison while Dino expands his business out West.
Two years later, Tobey is released and set on revenge — but he knows his only chance to take down his rival Dino is to defeat him in the high-stakes race known as De Leon. However to get there in time, Tobey will have to run a high-octane, action-packed gauntlet that includes dodging pursuing cops coast-to-coast as well as contending with a dangerous bounty Dino has put out on his car. With the help of his loyal crew and the surprisingly resourceful Julia, Tobey defies odds at every turn and proves that even in the flashy world of exotic supercars, the underdog can still finish first.
