The final score was not the most important number during the Huskies recent home gymnastics meet. The team raised money for a local elementary student battling leukemia, surpassing their fundraising goal according to coach Evan Moe. A check was presented to the Maas family for $2,025.

"For being a very small community, we have 21 gymnasts. I thought was an extraordinary amount of money raised. Our goal was $1,500. We crushed that. It was definitely the highlight of my night. Made be extremely proud to be a part of that," Moe said on Saturday's KRFO High School Coaches Show. Nova is a second-grader.

Money was raised from t-shirt sales, a bake sale, baskets, and a 50-50 raffle. The OHS gymnastics team earns a Team of the Week honor presented by Cash Wise Foods of Owatonna and Waseca. A gift card donation is being made each week by Cash Wise Foods on behalf of the Team of the Week.

Moe said the idea came from the gymnasts who knew of Nova's battle against cancer, "I know that some of the girls (know) the sister because she goes to the high school, but no gymnastics relation. Gymnasts, family, booster board, we kind of had the idea for the meet that we wanted to do some sort of Stick it to Cancer."

Regarding the meet, the Huskies beat Austin by scoring 139.95 to the Packers 130.25. Moe said the team lost gymnast Halle Theis to an injury during warm-ups, "Nothing too serious. She'll be back." He said the team has been relying on JV competitors so far this season due to a variety of injuries.

"I thought they did really well. We also saw the return of Lucy Macius, who has been an all-arounder for us since she started. That was great to see, having the 'rock' back in our lineup."

Moe is happy to see where the score was considering the Huskies don't have their full starting line up in place.
