The Power 96 Cool One on Wednesday came from the Grateful Dead. From their sixth studio release, Wake of the Flood, I chose the song "Eyes of the World." This single did not chart and was backed by "Weather Report Suite, Pt. 1" on the B-side of the 45 release. The album hit the stores on October 15, 1973, and made it to No. 18 on the U.S. Billboard 200.

Wake of the Flood was the first record released on the band's own label, not surprisingly called Grateful Dead Records, and was also the first studio album without Ron "Pigpen" McKernan. McKernan had passed away on March 28, 1973, at age 27 from a gastrointestinal hemorrhage.

Although I'm not a hardcore fan of the Dead, they are one the bands on my list of live shows that I wish I could've attended back in prime of their career. From the stories I've heard about the festival-like atmosphere that surrounded each of their shows, make it sound like a fun event to be a part of.

Please make sure to join me today at 4:35PM for the next Power 96 Cool One, brought to you by Kelly's Auto Parts in Faribault.
